Friends of the Climate

Friends of the Climate is a group of students from Duluth who have organized to protect the climate and oppose Duluth area efforts that would threaten the health of the environment and climate. Most notably, Friends of the Climate joined together with the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, the Sierra Club, and the Union of Concerned Scientists in June of 2019 to appeal the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission’s decision to approve Minnesota Power’s plan to build a new gas plant in Superior, Wisconsin. In their amicus curiae (Friends of the Court) brief, Friends of the Climate opposed the construction of the gas plant because of the long-term damaging effects on the climate and the environment. Friends of the Climate has also been involved in other events to advocate for a more sustainable and climate-friendly Duluth.
