2025 Workshops

The Eco3 Urban Farm is offering free gardening and farming workshops to the public this year! Workshops will be held on select Saturdays 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., March through September, at the Eco3’s Urban Farm site located at the back of Lake Superior College. Whether you are starting your first ever vegetable garden, or deepening your growing knowledge, our workshops have something for you! All workshops include tours of the Eco3 Farm features, lectures by experienced growers, and hands-on activities. No registration is necessary.

Raspberries, currants, honeyberries, gooseberries, oh my! Come learn how to care for these perennial and cold hardy fruit shrubs. These shrubs grow slowly and are best grown from cuttings rather than seed, in a process called “propagation”. Come learn how!

We have a short growing season up here in Duluth. The best way to extend your season is to start many of our vegetable plants indoors. Learn the what, when and how of starting your own plants indoors at this workshop.

They’re not plants. They’re not animals. They’re fungi! Learn what it takes to grow your own gourmet mushrooms and discover the mysteries of this often overlooked kingdom.

How do you set yourself up for your most successful gardening season ever? Planning. Learn about the limitations of our Duluth climate, how to read seed catalogues, and different crops’ space and time requirements in this informative workshop.

We are hosting a four-part series of workshops on commonly grown garden crops. The first of this series will feature the earliest crops you can grow in a Duluth garden: greens! Learn the ins and outs of growing lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens in this workshop.

Second in our common crops workshop series is hot crops, those delicious tropical delights we grow in our northern gardens: tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Learn best practices for seed starting, transplanting, trellising, pruning and harvesting these summertime favorites.

For our third installment of common crops workshops we are going underground: root crops. We’ll discuss growing carrots, beets and radish (the vegetable of the year!) from seeding to harvest.

We’ve all heard it’s magic for the garden, but what exactly is compost and what does it do to our garden soil? Learn this, how to make your own compost and more in this workshop.

Droughts are becoming increasingly common during our summers and we need to keep our thirsty crops watered. Attend this workshop to learn about your plants’ water needs, water conserving gardening practices, different methods of irrigation, and the calculations needed to run those irrigation systems smoothly.

Don’t call it dirt! We’re learning about soil. Demystify the composition of your garden soil and learn hands-on how to test your soil quality at home. Learn to read and comprehend professional soil tests and the five principles of soil health.

The last of our common crops series and last workshop of the season: growing garlic. This unique and delicious crop is planted in the fall and overwinters in your garden. Help put Eco3 2026 garlic crop in the ground and learn best practices for planting, harvesting, curing, and more.
