Shift to Efficient Appliances and Heat
A great way to be more energy efficient around the home is to take a look at your current appliances and how your home is heated. If you are using older appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, water heater, etc.) in your home you run the risk of spending more money than you realize on day-to-day activities. Buying newer appliances that are more efficient and ENERGYSTAR rated can pay for themselves in less than 10 years time. Increased efficiency of appliances will not only save you money but will lessen your burden on the environment through a reduction in greenhouse gases produced to power your home.
Every appliance has its optimal zone of operation and it doesn’t take much to find out what it is. For example refrigerators stop being effective after temperatures of 55-60 degrees, and setting the fridge 10 degrees colder or the freezer 5 degrees colder, you could be using up to 25% more energy.
